Katsina United began the second round of the NPFL season campaign after they were forced to a 1 – 1 draw by the league leaders Plateau United at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium in Katsina.
Plateau United thus remained top of the league standings with 36 points, while Katsina United dropped to 15th position with 26 points.
Katsina United next match will be against Gombe United at the Pantami Stadium in Gombe.
Plateau United continued their good away run of form as they fought hard to pick a vital away draw in Katsina.
Big striker Chinedu Udechukwu put the hosts in front on four minutes after a poor clearance by Golbe Elijah went straight to him in the box and he struck a powerful volley past goalkeeper Dele Ajiboye.
It was his fourth goal in three matches.
The visitors dominated possession in the middle of the park and threatened severally, but they could not carve a hole in the defence of Katsina United led by yeoman Ado Ali.
Tasiu Lawal was guilty of wasting a one-on-one opportunity in the 35th minute after he was unbalanced by a rushing Jimmy Ambrose and his effort was easily saved by Ajiboye
Coach Bazuaye boys could have got their security goal towards the end of the first half, but Chinedu’s effort went wide as the first half ended 1-0 in their favour.
On resumption of the second half, ‘The Chanji Boys’ first chance fell to Udechukwu, who preferred to go for a long-range effort after a looping pass from Ashadi Destiny met him, but Ajiboye did well to save his weak strike.
The hosts threw more men forward and continued to mount pressure in search of an equaliser and they were rewarded after Philip Azongo’s corner met an unmarked Daniel Itodo, who headed home to bring the scores to 1 – 1 in the 59th minute.
The hosts also created several openings thereafter, but they could not make it count as Tasiu Lawal, Obinna Eleje and Ibrahim Suleman of poor finishing.
