‘The Changi Boys’ piped Rivers United by 2 – 1 Sunday to moved fifth on the league table in one of the NPFL matchday 15 fixtures decided at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium in Katsina


Tasiu Lawal 18 minutes goal from the penalty spot and a brilliant close range strike by Usman Barau on 51 minutes ensured that Katsina United grabbed the maximum points against stubborn Rivers United.


Rivers United pulled one goal back on 76 minutes through Cletus Emotan who powered home a close range effort after he was set up by Christian Well.


It was a bright start to the first half under a scorching sun as both teams entertained the spectators in the stadium with good football artistry.


Katsina United had the first strike off target just two minutes into the proceedings  through Musa Suleman who connected brilliantly to a lofty cross from Frank Kappe but his diving header narrowly missed the target as Akande Abiodun restarted the game with a goalkick


As the game progressed, Ademola Adembambo would then saw his low strike crashed against the upright after he pounced to a dangerous low cross in by Mbokama on 15 minutes


Katsina United eventually found the break through with Tasiu Lawal converting from the penalty spot after Rivers United defender handled the ball in the box on 18 minutes


Rivers United then poured forward in search of the equalizer but it was counter-productive as they were almost punished with a counter-attacking move by Katsina United but Tasiu Lawal could not keep his effort low after he was set free in the box by Musa Suleman on 22 minutes


The Pride of Rivers came close to restore the parity on 26 minutes but Ubakama finish was wayward after he was freed on the right by the former Ifeanyi Ubah star Wasiu Jimoh


Both teams could not make their scoring opportunities count as the first half ended 1 – 0 in favor of the hosts


Christian Weli came close on 48 minutes with a thunder both strike that narrowly missed the target.


Usman Barau  would then double Katsina United advantage on 51 minutes with an emphatic close range strike after connecting well to a weighed square pass from Tasiu Lawal to give Katsina United a security goal


Both coaches introduced some fresh legs to fortify their squad as the game continued to hot-up.


It was ‘The Pride of Rivers’ who benefited from the tactical substitutions as Cletus Emotan poked home from close range to reduce the deficit on 67 minutes while Katsina United defenders ball-watch


Rivers United threw more body forward in search of the equalizer but were repelled by Katsina United hard nut defense lead by Ajanah Chinedu as ‘The Changi Boys’ ran away with a slim 2 – 1 victory


Katsina United have now moved to fifth on the league table on the back of this important  victory with 21 points picked from 15 games and will next travel to Gobme to keep  date with Wikki Tourists in the NPFL matchday 16


Tasiu Lawal who scored one and provided the second for Katsina United was voted as man of the match by the pressmen that covered the match
